Airport Guide

Punta Cana International AirportPUJ

The busiest airport in the Dominican Republic, serving the eastern resort coast — Punta Cana, Bávaro, and Cap Cana.

Who arrives here?

PUJ is the primary gateway for resort travelers — all-inclusive packages to Punta Cana, Bávaro, and Cap Cana almost always fly into this airport. It handles direct flights from the US, Canada, Europe, and Latin America.

What to expect on arrival

  1. 1

    Deplaning

Walk or take a bus to the terminal. PUJ has multiple terminals — follow the signs for arrivals / immigration.

  2. 2

    Immigration

Present your passport and e-ticket QR code. The officer may ask about your length of stay and hotel. Immigration lines can be 20–45 minutes at peak times.

  3. 3

    Baggage claim

Screens show which carousel your flight is on. Carts are available. Porters are available but expect a tip (~$1–$2 per bag).

  4. 4

    Customs declaration

Hand in your customs declaration (part of the e-ticket). If you have nothing to declare, proceed through the green channel.

  5. 5

    Exit and transport

Exit into the arrivals hall where hotel transfers, taxis, and rental car desks are located. Use the official taxi stand.

Licensed taxis available outside arrivals. Agree on the price before getting in. Use the official taxi stand, not touts inside.

InDriver and local apps work in the area. May have limited availability right at the airport.

Best for: Budget travelers familiar with apps

Rental car

From ~$30 USD/day

Multiple agencies at the airport. International license accepted. Driving is on the right.

Best for: Travelers exploring beyond resort zones

Practical tips

  • Have your e-ticket QR code ready before joining the immigration line.
  • Currency exchange kiosks at the airport offer poor rates — exchange at a bank or ATM in town.
  • Porters at baggage claim will expect a tip if you accept their help.
  • Do not accept unofficial taxi offers inside the terminal.
  • Immigration lines can be long — allow extra time for connections.
  • The airport has multiple terminals — confirm which one your airline uses.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Forgetting the e-ticket QR code (you need it for immigration).
  • Carrying more than $10,000 USD without declaring it.
  • Exchanging money at airport kiosks (very high fees).
  • Accepting rides from unlicensed drivers inside the terminal.
