Puerto Plata beach and fort

Destination Guide

Puerto Plata

The Dominican Republic's Atlantic coast combines colonial history, mountain scenery, and beach towns in a compact region. Puerto Plata offers more variety than a pure resort destination — and at a lower price point.

Why visit

Puerto Plata is where you go when you want beach time but also some substance. The Spanish fort, the cable car, and the nearby towns of Sosúa and Cabarete give you options beyond lounging. It's also significantly more affordable than Punta Cana, making it a strong choice for budget-conscious travellers who don't want to sacrifice quality.

Best for

  • Travellers wanting beach and culture in one trip
  • History buffs interested in colonial-era forts
  • Budget travellers looking for value outside the resort corridor
  • Kitesurfers and watersports enthusiasts (Cabarete)

What to do

Fortaleza San Felipe

A 16th-century Spanish colonial fort at the mouth of Puerto Plata harbour. One of the best-preserved forts in the Caribbean. Small museum inside. The waterfront walk around it is excellent at sunset.

Cable car to Mt. Isabel de Torres

A teleferico (cable car) that climbs 793 metres to the summit, where a replica of Christ the Redeemer statue stands above a botanical garden. The views over the coast and city are outstanding. Check operating hours before visiting — closures for maintenance are common.

Sosúa beach

A sheltered cove with calm water, seafood shacks, and a laid-back vibe. Less polished than Punta Cana but with good snorkelling and a pleasant town behind it. Popular with independent travellers and long-stay expats.

Cabarete kitesurfing

Cabarete is one of the world's top kitesurfing and windsurfing destinations — consistent trade winds, a wide beach, and dozens of schools make it ideal for beginners and experienced riders alike. Even non-surfers enjoy the Cabarete beach bar scene.

Getting there

Puerto Plata is served by Gregorio Luperón International Airport (POP), about 30 minutes from town when operating. Alternatively, fly into Santiago (STI) and transfer — approximately 40 minutes by road.

Where to stay

Playa Dorada resort zone

Gated resort complex east of Puerto Plata town. All-inclusive hotels on a decent beach. Most convenient if you want a resort base with day trips to the fort and cable car.

Sosúa

Small beach town 20 minutes east of Puerto Plata. Good selection of guesthouses, boutique hotels, and apartments. A long-standing expat community means reliable English-speaking services.

Cabarete

Lively beach town further east. Great for active travellers. A mix of surf hostels, mid-range hotels, and boutique properties right on the beach. The nightlife here is better than most of the north coast.

Food highlights

Sosúa cheese

Puerto Plata region has a distinct dairy tradition — Sosúa cheese (white fresh cheese) is produced locally and sold across the DR. Pick some up at a local colmado (corner store).

Fresh fish

The north coast has excellent fish — red snapper, grouper, and conch are all common. Waterfront restaurants in Puerto Plata town and Sosúa serve them grilled, fried, or in a stew.

European-influenced dining in Cabarete

A large European expat and tourist presence in Cabarete has produced an unusually varied restaurant scene for a small beach town. French, German, and Italian restaurants sit next to Dominican comedores.

Travel tips

  • Atlantic-facing waves are noticeably rougher than the south coast. Playa Dorada and Sosúa are more sheltered; Cabarete is active surf.
  • Puerto Plata is one of the most popular destinations for European visitors, particularly Germans and Canadians.
  • POP airport (Gregorio Luperón International) serves the region but has variable direct connections — confirm your route before booking.
  • If flying into STI (Santiago), Puerto Plata is about 40 minutes northwest on the main highway.
  • The cable car (teleferico) closes frequently for maintenance. Check social media or call ahead on the day.
  • Cabarete to Puerto Plata town is about 20–25 minutes by taxi or guagua (local bus).
