Long Stay

DR Residency Overview

The Dominican Republic has a defined pathway from tourist entry through to citizenship. Most long-term expats eventually pursue temporary residency — typically either the pensionado/rentista category or the investor category.

Residency and visa types

Tourist Stay

Up to 30 days (extendable)

All visitors receive a 30-day tourist stay automatically on entry. This is not a path to residency and does not permit work. Many long-stayers extend their stay by simply exiting and re-entering the country — each entry resets the clock. The e-ticket must be completed on each entry and exit.

Not suitable for establishing legal residency or working in the DR.

Temporary Residency

1–2 year process; renewable

Available to retirees (pensionado), investors, employees of DR companies, students, and family members of Dominican citizens. Requires submitting documentation to the Dirección General de Migración and typically takes 1–2 years to process. Must be renewed periodically.

Does not automatically confer the right to work. Specific categories (employee, investor) include work authorization.

Permanent Residency

After 5 years of temporary residency

After holding temporary residency for 5 years, applicants may apply for permanent residency. Permanent residents can live and work in the DR without further permits.

Permanent residency is the practical goal for most long-term expats.

Citizenship

After 2 years of permanent residency

Dominican citizenship can be applied for after 2 continuous years as a permanent resident. Requires demonstrating integration, language ability, and compliance with residency requirements. Dual citizenship is generally permitted.

Citizenship timelines and requirements are subject to change — verify with an attorney.

Popular residency categories

Rentista / Pensionado

One of the most popular residency paths for retirees and those with passive income. Requires proof of at least $1,500/month in stable income (pension, Social Security, rental income, etc.). Income documentation must typically be apostilled and translated.

Investor

For those making a qualifying investment in a DR business or real estate. Minimum investment thresholds vary and are subject to change. This category can include purchasing DR property, though property ownership alone does not automatically confer residency.

Documents generally required

Requirements vary by category and may change. The following are commonly required for most temporary residency applications:

  • Valid passport (with copies of all pages)
  • Birth certificate (apostilled and officially translated into Spanish)
  • Criminal background check (apostilled from your home country)
  • Medical certificate / health exam conducted in the DR
  • Passport-size photos
  • Proof of income or financial means (for pensionado/rentista)
  • Government fees (vary by category)

Foreign documents typically need to be apostilled in your home country and officially translated into Spanish by a certified translator.

Tax note

The Dominican Republic operates a territorial tax system. This means that income earned outside the DR is generally not subject to Dominican income tax. However, your home country may still have tax obligations for income earned while living abroad. Tax law is complex and country-specific — consult both a Dominican tax advisor and a tax professional in your home country.

Official authority

The Dirección General de Migración (DGM) is the official Dominican government body responsible for immigration and residency. Their official website is dgm.gob.do. Verify all requirements and fees directly with the DGM or your attorney before beginning an application.
