Practical money tips for DR

  • ATMs dispense pesos — use bank ATMs (Banreservas, BHD, Banco Popular) for best rates and security.
  • USD is widely accepted at resorts and tourist shops, but change is given in pesos at unfavorable rates.
  • Colmados (corner stores) and local restaurants prefer pesos — always carry smaller bills.
  • Tipping: 10% is standard at restaurants. In pesos is always appreciated.
  • Avoid exchanging money at the airport — rates are significantly worse than city banks.
  • Keep small bills (RD$50–200) on hand for street food, taxis, and tips.
